HMR versus HM2 question
i know nothing about this caliber. anyway, i won a 17 hmr at a deer banquent recently. when i went to buy ammo for it, i see hmr2 rounds, which are short, and regular hmr rounds, where are about 1/4" longer. can you fire either of these rounds in a regular .17 hmr? i'm really confused. they look like exactly the same thing only different lengths. here's a pic of what im talking about. the hm2 is on the left, the regular hmr on the right:

Re: HMR versus HM2 question
Chad, Congrats on your win! You only want to use the longer ones.

Re: HMR versus HM2 question
alright, thanks! it's a marlin with a 5 shot clip and a scope. nice little unit for a $5 ticket. the ammo looks pretty cheap.

and the 17 Mach 2 is a 22 Long Rifle necked down to 17 caliber. The purpose was to produce a higher velocity, flatter-shooting, better terminal performance varmint rimfire round. |
Re: HMR versus HM2 question
17HMR is an awesome round for target shooting and small critters (or head shots on larger critters).

Re: HMR versus HM2 question
As a point of reference, all 17 HMR ammunition with a polymer ballistic tips.....are produced by the exact same manufacturer....which is CCI. I understand that there may be variations in powder uesd...but it is still all made by CCI.
The ballistic tip ammo is all 17 grain...and goes about 2500 - 2550 ft/sec. This is only good for small game and for head shots....not much penetration and explosive fragmentation. There is a metal jacketed 20 grain that would be more appropriate for slightly larger game or longer shots where you want to make a head shot and have penetration ....like for longer shots on fox, coyote, racoons. I know of guys that have taken kangaroos up to 45 lbs. For tons of info on the 17 HMR..... www.17hmr.net I have a Mossberg 17 HMR with a 3.5 - 10x scope....perfect for hunting shots out to 150 yards...perhaps even 200 yards on small game. The 17 HMR is a very accurate round. Ammo is not cheap but not expensive....you can find it on sale for about $10/box of 50. It fits a niche of still quiet like a 22LR.....much flatter than the 22 Mag......still a lot of performance for a non centerfire round. In my book, fills the gap between 22LR and the .223 centerfire. I know it is a big step to go from 17 HMR to .223...but why bother owning anything in between? In an emergency - I'm sure it would kill a deer with a head shot. I really would not bother with the HMR2.....a neat idea, where you could easily convert a 22LR rifle with a simple barrel change. A Ruger 10/22 in HMR2 might be neat to have ....would be as much flatter shooting version of a 22LR....but still only has 22LR energy......about 120 ft-lbs of energy at muzzle....while the 22 Mag / 17 HMR is 250 ft-lbs energy at muzzle. Like I say...the next gun up in my selection is the .223 making 1200 ft-lbs an outstanding varmit round out to 250 yards in an accurate bolt gun........I guess I do have an M1 Carbine that makes nearly 950 ft-lbs.....but why bother with that if you have a .223? |
Re: HMR versus HM2 question
